Llwynon Water Treatment Works - Biomass Boiler Integration Project

Contract Period

May 2012 - Sept 2012

Project value

£150,000 M&E Project

The client

The works were undertaken on behalf of DCWW.

About the Project

The works involved the removal of a redundant boiler and generator within a remote boiler room, modifications to the structure and the installation of a 200 kW Biomass boiler. Extensive works were required to the existing main boiler room to modify the existing pipework and install an 8000 litre buffer vessel to enable the existing oil fired boiler plant to work in standby to the biomass boiler. New BMS contol and MCCP were designed and installed to ensure optimum use of the biomass boiler whilst also ensuring that the standby oil fired plant was available at times of peak load or in the event of plant failure. Civil works involved the forming of an external underground duct for pipework connection between the two boiler rooms and the installation of a 27M3 fuel silo. There was particular requirement for the system control to incorperate extensive monitoring equipment to satisfy the clients requirement for accurate measurement of the system efficiency. The works were carried out within an operational pumping station, which required specific awareness of the absolute need for business continuity, whilst ensuring safety of operatives and personnel within a hazardous evironment.
